My husband Jeff and I began our journey in 2013 after purchasing a Husqvarna Designer Topaz 30 Embroidery Machine JoAnn Fabrics. We had watched a demonstration there in the store that obviously had us hooked. There was quite the learning curve and with only one machine it took considerable time to get projects completed. Fast forward to 2016 and we were envisioning embroidering golf towels and hats for the golf courses we frequented. To do so we would need to upgrade to a faster machine.
Jeff visited all the sewing and quilting businesses in Chattanooga and North Georgia and decided to purchase a Brother Entrepreneur Pro 10-Needle from Chattanooga Sewing (now Chattanooga Sewing Machines). A couple of months after his hands-on-training with the 10-needle we attended a Floriani Embroidery “Quilting & Embroidery Masters Hands-On Sewing Project” event held in Chattanooga, TN. It was at the end of this event that we also became the proud owners of “The Dream Machine” by Brother, Innovis XV8500D.
With the addition of our two new machines, we began creating embroidery designs for family, friends, and co-workers on a custom basis. We embroidered custom golf towels for Hidden Valley Golf Course for two years. Embroidery was not in high demand (on our small scale) so we started thinking about what else we could do and still be able to make use of our machines.
In 2019 our sights turned to making quilts. We had been admiring customer quilts hung for display in the sewing and quilt shops we shopped. So, our YouTube search on how to make quilts began. There are so many ways! We found Donna Jordan’s Tutorials provided us with the clearest step-by-step instructions. So, we picked out a pattern, got our materials together and got busy sewing.
Our first quilt we did together on different machines (this is not a good thing to do but it worked for us). It was a XL Twin size, rail fence and was for my mother. It went fast! Upon finishing the piecing, we had to find someone to quilt it. Luckily one of our friends had recently purchased a longarm and agreed to quilt it for us. After piecing three more quilt tops, we were calling again to ask if our friend could quilt them for us. We began to feel we were becoming bothersome to our friend and so I decided to try my hand at stitching in the ditch, quilting in a hoop on the embroidery machine and finally free motion quilting on my Dream Machine. Results? Wrestling and manipulating quilts with a sewing machine is exhausting.
In 2020 Covid hit, and I began working from home which gave me extra time in the afternoon to quilt versus fighting traffic after work. After 2021 rolled in Jeff and I visited the Bernina Sew N Quilt Studio in Chattanooga and decided to invest in a Handi Quilter Forte 24 with a computerized Pro-Stitcher for automated quilting. The long arm quilting machine sits on the 12-foot gallery frame which will accommodate a king size quilt. This was perfect timing for us as it allowed us to make and finish eight quilts between August and November.
